French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen, has developed a high-pressure direct-injection gasoline engine that uses lean-burn stratified charge technology. Called the Hpi (high-pressure injection), the two-liter engine puts out 138 hp and is fitted on upper midrange Peugeot and Citroen vehicles.

Citroen says, the new engine burns significantly less fuel than previous generation XU two-liter engines and recent EW two-liter indirect-injection engines with a regulatory cycle. Engine response is also better at low running speed (170-Nm torque at 2,000 rpm) than ...
