Damaged in the Florence floods, 1966
The water wears his hands; furrows his face
It seeps into the wood of him, cracks and seams
swelling, splitting the still boards.
Slowly it infiltrates his beauty, lifting
gold leaf with infinite patience, flake
by flake; soaking the pigments away.
Water opens him. He's saturated,
running into long unwinding colours,
downward bruises, red and ochre;
shoulders sagging under the sopping weight.
