A system in which an electric field applied to the interface between ice and ice-coated surfaces breaks the bond and enables ice to be easily removed has been patented by researchers at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. By appropriate control of the field strength, the ice becomes essentially "stick free" to such an extent that ice forming on aircraft wings can be removed during flight by normal aerodynamic forces.
