The new Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, warned last night that Britain cannot afford to invest in a missile defence system without a major expansion of the defence budget.
Giving evidence to the Commons Defence Select Committee, he said that while it would be 'silly' not to look at ways of countering the threat of missile attack, it must not be at the expense of Britain's existing armed forces.
