One of the few choreographers I ever said "no" to was Twyla Tharp, and boy, was I sorry later. In about 1970, Sara Rudner and Rose Marie Wright, Tharp's two main dancers and scouts, watched a ballet class given by the popular teacher Maggie Black, and after the class, asked me to come audition for Tharp.
