WASHINGTON -- California on Monday gained its latest official winemaking region, with federal approval of the new Fair Play Viticultural Area in the ridgetops of El Dorado County.

After years of talk and loads of paperwork, the 350-acre Fair Play region won federal approval relatively easily and without the intramural controversy accompanying some other California viticultural applications.
