The case was recently reported' of a 27-year-old male who experienced recurrent kidney stones that, upon analysis, were found to be composed primarily of ephedrine, norephedrine, and pseudoephedrine. Upon further questioning, it was discovered that he had been taking 4 to 12 tablets daily of a "body building" supplement that contained 170 mg of Ma-Huang (Ephedra sinica) per tablet. Ma-Huang contains 6% ephedrine, as well as the ephedrine metabolites that were found in the kidney stone.
