George Crumb's "Star-Child," a piece so sonically torrential that Philadelphia Orchestra violinists wore ear plugs when they played it more than a decade ago, was named best contemporary classical work during the 43d annual Grammy Awards.
The winning recording, "70th Birthday Album, Star-Child," on Bridge Records, was by the Warsaw Philharmonic and choirs, with soloists chosen from among New York instrumentalists.
