In 1839, when Maurice de Guerin died of tuberculosis at age 28, he was survived by a fragmentary oeuvre. Some of his writings had been destroyed by the author himself.(1) Others languished in the hands of family members and acquaintances from his native Languedoc to Paris and Brittany and beyond.
