Introduction
The study of Quaternary processes within the Southern Highlands of New South Wales has evoked considerable interest during the past 40 years. More recently, the occurrence of extensive dryland salinity in the area has led to further detailed investigations into the origin of salts causing the salinity (Acworth and Jankowski 2001, this volume) and to the study of the processes associated with formation of the sedimentary units in which dryland salinity is developed (Nicoll and Scown 1993; Acworth et al. 1997; Jankowski and Acworth 1997).
