It seems we gardeners are just not adapting to compost without peat. Despite pleas from environmentalists to conserve peat bogs, 94% of composts are peat-based.
Amateur gardeners used 54% more peat in 1999 than they did in 1993, and in 1999 some 66% of peat was bought by amateur gardeners, a new survey by Gardening Which? reveals.
