NEW YORK -- Hermes has hit a milestone with its growing scarf sales. For the first time, it manufactured and sold more than 1 million scarves in 1988, according to Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermes, chairman, here this week from Paris for the opening of the Hermes exhibit, "A Scarf Is Born."

Dumas-Hermes said the scarf business is "growing very fast." He said scarf sales were 32 percent ahead in 1988. "It is hard for us to keep up with demand," said Dumas-Hermes. Scarves account for a little less than one-third of the firm's total sales, he ...
