Georgia Senate approves change to state flag; Confederate emblem will be smaller.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)

ATLANTA _ Georgia's Senate voted Tuesday to adopt a new state flag that dramatically shrinks the controversial Confederate battle emblem, ending a bitter legislative fight that had renewed old questions about racial healing and Southern heritage.
With its 34-22 vote, the Senate not only approved the new flag, a blue field dominated by the state seal above postcard-sized replicas of five other flags _ including one bearing the Confederate emblem. It has also apparently forestalled a threatened economic boycott by NAACP and other black leaders.
