2001 FEB 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Suicide gene therapy using 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) can be enhanced by using yeast cytosine deaminase instead of bacterial cytosine deaminase (bCD), suggests a study from the United States.

"The efficacy of cancer gene therapy using bCD/5-FC enzyme/prodrug strategy is limited by the inefficiency of cytosine deaminase (CD)-catalyzed conversion of 5-FC into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)," stated E.
