BECOMING--AND BEING--PETER GOULD

Although the title of Peter Gould's latest--and last--book, Becoming a Geographer (1999), suggests an autobiography, it consists of an infusion of papers written over almost forty years, grouped into nine thematic sections rather than arranged chronologically. It follows an earlier book, The Geographer at Work (Gould 1985a), which, though traversing much the same ground, was newly written in textbook form rather than comprising, for the most part, reprinted papers with commentary.
