Jefferson Davis was born on June 3, 1808, the youngest of ten children. His father, Samuel Emory Davis, named him after Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president.
At the time of Jefferson's birth, the Davis family lived near Fairview, Kentucky. When the family farm there proved too small and unproductive, Samuel decided to move the Davises farther west. They went to Louisiana Territory in 1810. The following year, when Jefferson was almost three years old, the family settled in Woodville, which was in Mississippi Territory. The Davises named their home Rosemont.
