The Turkish-themed Mardi Gras costumes cooked up by French art students for a Roman parade in 1748 brought cheers from crowds lining Rome's main street, and even dazzled the reigning Pope, who broke into unprecedented applause.

They were such a hit that their clever young designer, Joseph-Marie Vien, decided to immortalize them in a series of 32 etchings before they were tossed out - or cannibalized as costumes for other festivals.
