The European Union's Environment Commissioner, Margot Wallstrom, has welcomed a report released last Friday by an EU-led task force that has been investigating the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania early this year (M J, February 18, p.121). Ms Wallstrom says the report has encouraged her to move ahead with proposals for stricter safety rules for Europe's metal mines which the European Commission put forward in October. The task force, set up in March to suggest ways of improving the existing rules covering European mining waste, has made detailed recommendations on rules ...
