I first met Nellie Staves at a conference sponsored by St. Lawrence University at their conference center on Upper Saranac Lake three years ago.

I remember the moment as if it were yesterday. Nellie was before a group, describing two sightings of a panther crossing a forested road in the Adirondacks, at the same place and almost the same time of year. As it has been quite some time since a panther has been reliably sighted in the Adirondacks, hers was a sighting not to be taken lightly. Nellie now keeps an instamatic camera handy at all times, just in case she sees it again. ...
