Magnolia Hi-Fi Inc. grew its high-end electronics retail business from the seeds of the tech-savvy Seattle area. It later expanded into the Portland, Ore., market, and last year added two stores in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The 13-store chain wanted to expand further into California, but the family-owned firm lacked the resources to fully conquer the pricey Silicon Valley.

"We made a decision that we needed capital to grow," said Jim Tweten, Magnolia's president and the son of its founder.
