CHESAPEAKE -- The Dismal Swamp southeastern shrew, a federally protected critter known to scurry about the forested wetlands of Chesapeake, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, is about to lose its government bodyguard.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, backed by new scientific research, has started the process of removing the skittish, dark-red, mouse-like shrew from the federal Endangered Species List.
