Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Corp. agreed to terms with the Navy for the joint construction of four New Attack Submarines for $4.2 billion.

The contract, signed late Wednesday, adds $2.1 billion to Newport News Shipbuilding's backlog, making it $5.2 billion. That backlog includes construction of the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, the nuclear refueling and overhaul of the carrier Nimitz and construction of two more commerical petroleum product tankers.
