In the pre-dawn hours of June 22, 1813, some 700 American troops, mostly untested militia, awaited the onslaught of about 4,000 British.

Dug in on Craney Island, the Americans knew there could be no retreat. They also understood that if they failed, the British could overwhelm the hysteric populations of Norfolk and Portsmouth and seize the 36-gun frigate Constellation.

At daybreak, the British began their move with an amphibious landing at Portsmouth's Pig Point. But the attack on Craney Island was foiled by water too deep to ford, ...
