SUFFOLK -- Robert S. Trieff, the Navy doctor who died Tuesday when his motorized hang glider crashed in northern Suffolk, was an innovator.

About three weeks ago, he bought a Mosquito - a powered unit that allowed him to launch his hang glider on the area's flat terrain. Trieff, 34, had been hang gliding for about eight years. With the Swedish-made Mosquito, he added fuel to his flight.

Trieff, who lived in Portsmouth and worked in the emergency room of Portsmouth Naval Hospital, had one of only about two dozen such powered ...
