It's the Navy's Maginot line against a relentless invader - hurricanes.

A series of temporary buoys - air-dropped strategically throughout the Atlantic - are giving Navy and civilian meteorologists an unprecedented opportunity to assess hurricanes. The devices literally take the pulse of storms as they move and grow over open ocean where storm data is usually unavailable.
