A Song of Ceylon was made in Sydney in 1985. From its title one anticipates that the film will transport the viewer to the homeland of its Sri Lankan-born film-maker, Laleen Jayamanne, yet it betrays this promise with a refusal to represent, document or show Sri Lanka. `Ceylon' in Jayamanne's film stands as an empty signifier, dislodged from the body of land for which it once stood. This disjunction between title and content mirrors the disjunction between the name `Ceylon' and the island since its post-colonial renaming as Sri Lanka.
