WASHINGTON -- The head of the Secret Service, reacting to a book detailing some private escapades of President John F. Kennedy, is reminding agents that the ''secret'' in the agency's name is supposed to mean something.

In a letter sent earlier this month to 3,200 current and 500 former agents, Secret Service Director Lewis C. Merletti said interviews by four former agents on Kennedy's detail were ''regardless of (their) accuracy, very troubling and counterproductive to the mission of the Secret Service.''
