Mary Elizabeth Oaks, former postmistress in Sparta, died Sunday at the Gallatin Health Care Center in Warsaw. She was 81.
Mrs. Oaks put a personal touch in the post office, said her daughter, Marcedes Cozart of Sparta. ''She had a gentle way about her.''
A few of her customers couldn't read. Mrs. Oaks would read them their mail and write their letters for them, Mrs. Cozart said.
Mrs. Oaks and her husband, Norvin, grew up on neighboring farms in Carroll County, outside of Sanders. After World War II, they were married and lived in Covington, where ...
