Once upon a time, Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, saw a beautiful maiden named Europa picking flowers in a meadow and decided that he wanted her. He changed himself into a bull and enticed her to ride upon his back across the Mediterranean waters to the island of Crete. There, she had three sons by Zeus: Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Sarpedon. Minos became king of Crete, where he lived in a huge, beautiful palace. Under his command was a powerful fleet that ruled the neighboring seas.
