When the central characters of a book are a precocious 12-year-old and a wise old gorilla, one can't be blamed for expecting a Disneyesque adventure tale with a light-hearted plot and a fairy-tale ending.

My Ishmael is no such story. Instead, it is a lesson in the evolution of modern society - at least as one author sees it.
