WASHINGTON -- Mixing the warmth of a back-slapping politician with the ferocity of a bare-knuckled street fighter, Harold Ickes generated both fear and affection during his days at the White House.
Words like feisty, smart, fierce and tough often were used by White House staffers to describe Ickes when he was deputy chief of staff. Then again, words like sentimental, loyal and considerate also were tossed around.
