Dancers loathe it, audiences love it and ballet companies can't live without it. It's The Nutcracker, the century-old ballet that has become a holiday tradition for families and the main source of funding for ballet companies everywhere in the United States.
In 1882, The Nutcracker was just another premiere at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky's third ballet, it enjoyed only a moderate success in spite of the fact that it was based on E.T.A. Hoffman's beloved story Nutcracker and the Mouse King.
