SPACECRAFT DETECTS MARS MAGNETIC FIELD.(Local)

Mars Global Surveyor has detected a weak magnetic field around the red planet, the first indication of a magnetic field in more than a dozen missions to Mars over the past three decades.

The presence of a magnetic field suggests Mars has a molten core like Earth's, or had one in the recent past.

Such a powerful feature is responsible for volcanoes, and at one time could have contributed to a thicker atmosphere, water and other features compatible with life.
