SUGAR WORKERS' STRIKE HALTS PROCESSING ACTIVITIES, THREATENING DOMESTIC SUGAR SUPPLIES.

A strike by Mexico's largest sugar workers union, the Sindicato de la Industria Azucarera y Alcoholera (SIAAC), has halted almost all sugar-processing activities and could threaten domestic sugar supplies in the coming months.

SIAAC members, representing close to 50,000 employees at 58 sugar mills, went on strike in mid-November to demand higher wages and improvements in their retirement plan. Workers are demanding a 25% wage increase. They are also seeking the right to have access to retirement funds at age 65 or after 35 years of service, whichever comes first.
