Sometime in the next few days all Brachycentrus will break loose.
Colorado's most celebrated bugs, caddis flies, will squeeze out of their ice cream cone-shaped cases on the bottom of the Arkansas River and hatch out by the millions. The river's surface will dance with the rings of rising trout, mostly robust wild browns.
Hundreds of caddis flies will be splattered on windshields traveling along U.S. 50 and 24. Flocks of swallows will swoop in a feeding frenzy above. Below, trout will stuff themselves to the gills.
