Prosecutors dismissed child abuse charges against a Denver fifth-grade teacher Tuesday morning as his trial was to begin.

Luis Lozano, 48, a teacher at Bromwell Elementary School in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood, was to stand trial in Denver District Court on charges of fondling one of his students, now 12.

But prosecutors dismissed the charges after the girl gave an embellished account of the assaults during an interview with prosecutors Monday night, said Daniel Recht, Lozano's attorney.
