ENGLEWOOD -- Gene Martin was 17 in 1929 when he lied about his age to get a job at the General Iron Works manufacturing plant on West Bates Avenue.

``I was promised they would make a machinist of me, which they did,'' said Martin, now 86.

Martin, of Denver, worked his way into several management positions during the next 48 years, while General Iron Works turned out tons of mining equipment, refrigerating machinery, clarifiers for Hoover Dam, the gate for Grand Coulee Dam and steam generators for a nuclear power ...
