AUSTIN, Texas -- A sunken shipwreck discovered earlier this year off the Texas coast is not French explorer La Salle's flagship l'Aimable, Texas state historians said this week.
The Texas Historical Commission has tried to link the wreck to Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, since the ship was found embedded 20 feet below the water in February.
But artifacts discovered date the wreck to the mid to late 1800s - decades after l'Aimable sank in Matagorda Bay - and show that it may be of Spanish ...
