George McMakin's horse pasture seems a world away from the suburbia creeping toward a nearby hill.
He and his neighbors have clung to Western individualism, living in one-of-a-kind homes on grassy, four-acre plots. They scoff at the elbow-to-elbow rooftops just north in Highlands Ranch.
