For any jazz fan growing up in Boston as I did in the late '50s and early '60s, the band in town was the orchestra led by trumpeter Herb Pomeroy.

As strange as it may sound, one of the saxophonists in Pomeroy's big band was a world-class piano player named Jaki Byard.

Last month, the 76-year-old Byard was killed in his New York home. Saturday one of his students, Denver-based pianist Geoff Cleveland, remembers his teacher with a memorial concert to benefit the Byard family.
