Most of the news we hear about endangered wild plants and animals is grim. Fortunately, success stories fan the flames of hope. The greenback cutthroat trout is one those stories.

Cutthroat are the only trout species native to Colorado. Four subspecies of cutthroat have lived in Colorado: the greenback and the yellowfin on the Eastern Slope, and the Colorado River and Rio Grande on the Western Slope. The yellowfin cutthroat disappeared entirely, and the greenback nearly met the same fate.
