TUCSON -- Alum and benzoin, two over-the-counter items, could prove to be a magic potion for Colorado Rockies pitcher John Thomson.

In an effort to avoid the blister problems that have plagued him every season, Thomson has been applying a mixture of aluminum ammonia sulfate, a pickling agent better known as alum that comes in powder form, with benzoin, a sticky substance that transforms the powder into a paste.
