Tribal man of peace

(1801-1868)

While Stacey Oberly fights to preserve a tribe's language, a man named Black Kettle fought 135 years earlier to preserve a shaky peace between Indians and white settlers.

Killings by both sides had created an explosive atmosphere in Colorado Territory in the early 1860s. Black Kettle, the Southern Cheyenne chief, recognized that continued raids by tribal warriors on white settlers would bring his people's extermination.
