Physician executives leave jobs for a number of reasons, only one of which-nonperformance--is rightly characterized as "being fired." In this chaotic marketplace, many traditional lines have been blurred, but getting fired is still a well-defined experience, and uncommon for physician executives.

It's incorrect to say you were fired if you were laid off in a downsizing, squeezed out as part of a merger, or if you departed from an organization's employ by mutual agreement. You may be gone, but you weren't fired. Being fired carries with it an implication of failure ...
