The National Academy of Sciences' most prestigious annual award will go to an 88-year-old Coloradan who helped redefine how humans should share the planet with nature.

Gilbert White, who is still active at the University of Colorado, will receive the NAS Public Welfare Medal at ceremonies in Washington, D.C., in April. Previous winners include astronomer and author Carl Sagan and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.

The award is presented annually to honor extraordinary use of science for the public good.
