Only a few relatively common, widely distributed ore minerals occur rarely in well-crystallized specimens. Cubanite, a mineral known primarily to those scientists dealing with ore microscopy, is one of these. It is an important ore mineral in the famous Cu-Ni deposits of Sudbury, Ontario, and has probably been seen by most of us unknowingly as we examined sulfide-rich specimens dominated by chalcopyrite, a mineral that it closely resembles and with which it tends to occur as tiny inclusions.
