FRANZ JOSEF STRAUSS was always larger than life. He aroused deep feelings in a way very rare in post-1945 German politics. At the news of his death on October 3rd people wept openly in the streets of Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria which Mr Strauss ruled like a king. Even old rivals Mr Strauss often snubbed as "waistcoat-pocket politicians" looked genuinely shocked. Well they might.
