JUDGES and gunmen are pushing Pakistan in opposite directions. A mysterious massacre in the city of Hyderabad on October 1st, and counter-murders elsewhere in the province of Sind, killed about 300 people and led to rumours that the country was on its way back to martial law. On October 2nd the Supreme Court pointed the other way by deciding that political parties should be allowed to contest the parliamentary election due on November 16th.
