Rio de Janeiro's suburban railway network has a long history of deterioration. But now, following privatisation in 1998, it is coming back virtually from the dead.

THE suburban railway in Rio de Janeiro could have disappeared entirely by now but for the fact that it was handed over to a private sector operator two years ago. Indeed, one state governor proposed to build bus lanes in place of the track. Fortunately, Brazil's federal government rejected his idea in favour of privatisation.
