Karate has grown enormously in popularity over the last two decades in the Chicago area, thanks primarily to John DiPasquale and his Shotokan karate clubs.

The sport has reached many children and adults through DiPasquale's classes at park districts from Mundelein to Naperville.

Starting in 1978 at the Glenview Park District with four students, his clubs now number 65 with over 6,500 students.

DiPasquale pointed out several reasons why karate has exploded in popularity as a youth sport.
